Diabetes potentiates the emergence and expansion of antibiotic resistance

Diabetes causes severe skin and soft tissue infections that are resistant to antibiotic treatment. A study found that Staphylococcus aureus SSTIs evolve rapidly in diabetic mice, with diabetes-associated immune cell dysfunction playing a minor role. Hyperglycemia facilitates the expansion of resistant mutants. Insulin control significantly decreased the incidence of antibiotic-resistant S. aureus in diabetic mice.
